EMO delivers Eemshaven offshore service base to Siemens

After only six months under construction, the offshore base for the Ems Maritime Offshore B.V. (EMO) in Eemshaven has been completed. The building was officially handed over to EMO on 14 October 2016 by Project Manager Jan-Gerd Huiges from the general contractor Kooi, a building firm based in Appingedam in the Netherlands.

In the future, the building is to be shared between EMO and Siemens Netherlands. Siemens has concluded a long-term contract with EMO to build and operate a service hub on its behalf. For this purpose, EMO has secured and developed a site at the Beatrix Harbour on some 3500 m² of the total area of approximately 33,000 m².

The service hub includes a 600 m² warehouse space and an office wing covering approximately 500 m². The hub offers everything necessary in an offshore base. In addition to conventional offices and meeting facilities, it also provides changing rooms, lounges and a drying room for workwear. It meets all of Siemens’ requirements perfectly. EMO's Project Manager Michael Baumfalk adds: “The building complies with the latest energy standards and conforms to the demanding quality and safety requirements of the customer.”

Siemens is delivering and erecting 150 wind turbines for the Dutch GEMINI wind farm. Last year, they were also contracted to supply the operational and maintenance services (O & M Services) for the next 15 years. In order to reliably undertake the work, Siemens had been scouting for a suitable location and found what they were looking for in Eemshaven with EMO. “EMO is a partner company which engages with our particular needs, and which has developed a model logistics concept”, reveals Gerard van Rijn, Property Manager at Siemens.

EMO itself has been active in Eemshaven since 2015. In addition to operating a floating dock with a length of 2 x 150 m , EMO co-ordinates the deployment of its CTVs from here. EMO Managing Director Knut Gerdes is delighted: “The new offshore base is proof that we are also a desirable destination for harbour logistics operations.”

The EMO B.V. terminal provides direct access to the water and lots of space for different configuration options. The implementation of the project entailed securing the first 3500 m² of the total area of 33,000 m². The warehouse and the offices are partly let to Siemens, which means that additional customers can be served at any time. “Eemshaven has already demonstrated that it is perfectly suited for the erection of wind farms. Now we have the opportunity to build on our good reputation by supporting the operational phases. We are ready and waiting to develop additional warehousing capacity as and when demand increases further”, explains EMO Managing Director Knut Gerdes. “We are in any case perfectly prepared to offer every customer their ideal solution.” EMO has invested approximately 1.3 million euros in the project.

EMO forms part of the AG “EMS“ group of companies, which was the first enterprise to move into Eemshaven way back in 1972. Today, the “Borkum Line operates services to and from Borkum from three locations and offers a terminal of approximately 10 hectares in size. In addition to a terminal building and warehouse, an area of approximately 50,000 m² of secured storage is available. Customers can also look forward to a new connection from Eemshaven to Roodeschool.

EMS Maritime Offshore GmbH was founded in 2010 by AG “EMS”. Their primary competences lie in the supply of wind farms. The focus is placed on special service and crew transfer ships. EMS Maritime Offshore also provides traffic control ships and standby ships for offshore construction sites. Port and warehouse logistics and port management, including at locations and base ports such as Eemshaven, Borkum, Emden, Cuxhaven, Büsum and Helgoland, are also part of their activities. Control centres for offshore wind farms are operated in Berne, Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Hooksiel, Helgoland and in Sassnitz. Today, the company has approximately 100 employees, and the EMS AG Group has over 450 in total, as well as 50 student workers.
